PC-6 engine failure after takeoff

Post by srjones0405 » Sun May 10, 2020 6:50 am

I am new to this plane as of this week, I can't figure out why this is happening. Some flights go uneventful, other times I fly the same way I always do, try to take off multiple times with engine failure around 1,000 feet , than give up. I thought it was oil temp, and sometimes adjusting that helped, I triple check I'm not over-torquing the engine. Now I am puzzled and disappointing with my purchase, even though it may be my fault. It may be Oil pressure, but I'm not sure, its hard to stare at the engine instruments while trying to fly. Hope someone can help.
thanks,

Just to add, to narrow it down. There is a loud bang/clunk sound when it happens, then the prop pitch goes completely back without me moving it.

I've experienced the same twice. Once during descent, and the other right on departure. I have close to 5000 hours operating a aircraft with a PT-6. They aren't this unreliable. If they were they wouldn't make it past certification.

do you notice the digital readouts on the engine gauges flashing?

No I triple checked I am not over-torquing or going above 2000 rpm, I also tried checking my oil temps. What are all possible things that cause engine failure that are simulated?

How is your engine condition indicator in MVAMs?

I have tried resting it, it's not that, but it reads normal. Is there any chance you could watch my flight and see what it is? I just had it happen 2 more times.

Just to go down the list and Answer,
1. All gauges good Trq, Prop, ITT, Oil. As I said it 'banged' and the engine seized even on descent. So a catastrophic engine failure with no other indicators of an impending failure.
2.MVAMS reads a 'Good' Engine' Condition.

Yes, MVAMS reads engine good after the failures.

Not sure if this helps, but the suction warning illuminates as well. I looked through the fourms, same exact problem as this viewtopic.php?f=211&t=10962&p=91901&hil ... ure#p91901 but I never am using reverse, my oil temp is good, I am baffled that this continues to happen.

Any update or further support in this? This aircraft is practically unusable with a failure rate of over 50%.

Hi, so I am having the exact same issue. Everything is running correctly, will the MVAMS report why it failed, that might help.

Spiky hardware axis , firewalling throttles, hot starts etc. All cause engine degredation. I always check engine in MVAMS before a flight.
