Battery issue

Post by rnurse.bc » Fri Oct 04, 2019 7:58 pm

Please contact Tomas for this message,

Hello Tomas,

I'm doing the review flight in the PC6 and I'm flying in the Caribbean with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. I got the Battery hot warning and suddenly on approach the battery cuts off. I read the manual and saw this was simulated and if starter limits are not respected. On approach the checklist says to turn the Ignition Switch to On. After doing this the battery fails on me and I had to land without flap control.

What causes this issue and what is proper procedure to avoid it? Should the ignition switch be turned on for landing?

Hi,

To save the life of your battery, you need to respect starter ON/OFF cyles as per the manual. And never, ever, forget to turn off the starter after engine is idling stable. That is the common cause of batt overtemp.

Ok,

Well the checklist that comes with the manual says to ON for Before landing. I did this and the battery chut off on me. So what should be the proper procedure regarding the Ignition switch on final for landing?

Switching ignition to ON before landing is an approved procedure.

If you had overtemped the battery and you turn on the ignition system it is probable that the battery might die.
However, if you didn't overtemp and after switching the ignition system the battery dies, that's another stoty and I would have to check the code.

Ok well here is the video that includes the battery failure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7xD06RCBHU

At around 27:25 I turned on the ignition as per the checklist for before Landing. The later on the battery failed without much of a Battery Hot warning.

Remember this is P3D V4.4.12 I'm running and not V4.5, so this maybe some cause of error.

In the case switching on Ignition for landing, what should be the proper procedure then?

Ok, I checked your video.

There was no battery overtemp at all.

What happened is that by mistake, instead of switching the Ignition on, you switched the Starter on. It is easy to detect as GENERATOR caution illuminated. As a consequence of the starter running, the battery depleted enough to disable many of the instruments, flaps motor one of the principals.

I also noted that you did the After Start checklist with the Starter still ON, and you exceeded by 15 seconds the recommended max Starter On time.
Always turn off the Starter as soon as engine idles at ~ 50 %. Remember all details count to keep the engine and rest of the systems healthy.

I noticed that you never turned ON the GTX-330 transponder... ;)
