Dhc3 Otter autopilot

Just purchased the Otter, I like it, but am unable to switch on the autopilot. I have read the ap manual but when I click on the ap button AP flashes on the readout screen for about four seconds then disappears. Neither does th AP respond to the usual keyboard key Z. I'm using FSX, nor the usual button I use on my controller. These keys and buttons work with all my other aircraft. Can anyone help please.

Try holding the Z key down for about 2 seconds...

As with Hooper57. Manual states;

When pushed and held for 0.25 seconds,

However in reality it takes slightly longer.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, it worked when I held the z down for longer. My button on the controller didn't switch the autopilot on until I pressed it a couple of times. Have now managed heading hold, the approach button is not responding at the moment but will have another look at the manual. I do miss things sometimes.
