Volumetric prop effect

Post by Michael Felso » Fri Apr 06, 2018 3:10 am

Is anyone else seeing the volumetric prop animation working in reverse ie. prop lever set forwrd to fine pitch, exterior model showing course pitch (thick blade effect) and when prop lever pulled back to course pitch or feather, exterior model shows thin blade effect. Will this be addressed in an upcoming update? Other than that I'm really enjoying the new 310, nice work Milviz!!

With SP1 on FSX boxed this was fine (or my memory is wrong), I haven't verified this in SP2 yet.
Which version of the C310R Redux and which simulator do you use?

The props were operating in the old model as you've said is correct, but numerous other RW pilots informed me it was incorrect, so I swapped the animations around to the way they are now. According to this diagram, they are now animated correctly:

I just tested with 3.180406 in FSX boxed: You were right, the prop effect is wrong:

N4GIX, I thought the change was only to have feathered props when the engine is not running, regardless of prop lever position (which works correctly)

I have to admit that I am still very confused by this idea that the props should be feathered when the engines are not running. I never recall having seen this in real world and I have not been able to find one single photo of a 310 sitting on the ground, engines shut down and props in the feathered position. Can you please clarify the reason for the feathered prop animation in cold and dark or after engine shutdown? I had gotten a response on this once before but it was a bit unclear to me and I think that it may have since been deleted.

Thank you,

Jesse Cochran

How much thrust do you suppose will be produced when the props are set at Ground Idle? (which is with the prop levers pulled fully back?

Indeed, the only photo I found with the props in feathered position is this derelict 310:

Every time I think I understood it correctly, I read something like this and I'm no longer sure :)

But my understanding of http://www.newvisionaviation.com/Conten ... 0Props.pdf suggests that the current effect is wrong.
Pilot moves propeller control lever forward -> blade angle decreases to low pitch
Pilot moves propeller control lever aft -> blade angle increases to high pitch

Basically, by pulling the prop lever back, the pilot wants lower prop RPM, the blades have to "bite" more air, so with the prop levers in the position pictured my first image, the blades should look like in the second image. (maybe not as much angle as in the second image, because the throttles are nearly closed, but I don't think I have seen the throttles having effect on the blade pitch.

Throttles absolutely will have an effect on pitch. Constant speed prop and variable pitch props are not the same thing. In the latter, the pilot controls the pitch directly. In the former, he controls the RPM setting. When making throttle changes, the pitch will adjust to maintain the RPM they were set at.

In real life, yes, but not in the C310R Redux (I just tested it in cruise flight at FL50)

Yes, that difference is what I learned today and which leads me to believe that the animation in the current Redux is reversed from what it should be.

This looks good now in SP3, thank you!
