Straight Floats STOL Pitch Stability

Post by Kalin » Tue Aug 08, 2017 9:04 pm

I find the straight float(STOL) version quite difficult to trim in level flight. Even small corrections make the nose go up and down. The Amph in previous versions was quite stable. I changed the pitch_stability to 2.0 in aircraft.cfg and this helped a bit. What is your opinion? Otherwise, this update is JUST GREAT! Thank you!

Yes. I noticed this in the straight floats non-STOL version tonight as well. I'm not sure if I've tested the amphib since the update; have the flight dynamics of all the float models been tweaked this way? Can I ask if there was a reason? It's not unflyable, but it's more work... I kind of doubt an aircraft the size / weight / rigging of a Beaver would be this twitchy.

There were no modifications to the FDE in the update, not sure what else it would be.

Huh, that's interesting. I seem to notice a pretty big difference, not just in stability but in drag - the touchdown attitude and power required to control descent feel different. Also, once on the water the elevator is very effective - full back yoke will haul the nose right off the water again, and it didn't used to. I really like the new feel, minus the pitch sensitivity... might have to try Kalin's tweak, which is fine. It's just weird that at least some of us are seeing this if there's been no FDE changes??

Weight distribution , realism settings , Fuel Load , Passengers and baggage , controllers , null zone settings , the list is long that can affect that in each of our sim's without touching the fde , in the test I did I find it normal , and really like the autopilot update each time I get a chance to use it .

Just tested the new file with the STOL and for me works perfect! Lets see what is StearmanDriver opinion.

Thanks, CJ!

Agreed, Straight floats STOL model now flies like the other straight floats variants. Thanks!
