KAP 140

Pitch axis warning light is still lit after preflight test. Have tried all manner of trim configurations and light will not extinguish. Can you suggest why the light will not extinguish after 30 seconds and even after as much as 5 minutes ? VS mode will not engage. Going to heading mode in level flight engages and if an altitude is pre-selected and alt arm is engaged, the aircraft will climb to the altitude and level off, but it does not switch to Alt mode. Using VS mode is not possible as the "P" warning never extinguishes.

Please advise as to what I may be doing wrong. (I have carefully read the KAP 140 manual)
