Download Update Failed

After downloading for over an hour, I got a message that there was a problem opening the download. I realize that my slow internet connection in the woods of Maine is probably to blame, however it would be extremely helpful is there was an alternative way to download updates so I could utilize my download manger. Failing that option would you please provide the size of the download so that I and others with slow connections can plan to update at non-peak times.
