Another question for Bob , did you buy the addon pack too ? , if yes were you testing a straight float version? if yes that revised file would need to be in these xml sound folders too.

If no , I will try something else tomorrow for you .

Hi Chuck
Yes I have the expansion pack and yes I put the revised file in all the float sound folders.

Thanks,
Bob

Just to confuse the issue further, I've noticed this is an intermittent problem for me. The first water landing I tried after the update (I think before installing the expansion pack), I had decent water sounds. I've also heard the "hum" in place of water sounds during testing. I wish I could remember if it was unique to certain variants, but I can say that I got it on the straight-float Alaska Forestry paint tonight.

I was messing with the STOL variants tonight, testing takeoff distance (and distance to clear a 35 foot obstacle is reduced on average by a few hundred feet in the STOL variants, nice job!), and I noticed something. The audible stall buffet that you get when riding right on the edge of critical AoA after takeoff sounds / feels an awful lot like what sometimes happens in place of water sounds. Maybe related, maybe just a coincidence, I hope it doesn't lead someone on a wild goose chase. Just throwing it out there.

Yes. I had that happen once. I stalled once about 50 feet off the deck and heard the rumble immediately before I slammed onto the water.

Yes , that's the stall buffet and sound effect , its been repurposed in the floats version to add wave motion at speed , anyone who has swapped that SND18 out for the HydroplaneSplash will find stall behavior somewhat out of the ordinary.

An alternate plan is to add the CONTENTS of the attached zip file to the DH2 folder located in the base model DHC-2 Beaver Milviz/panel.

This will turn off the sound on water only , wave motion will remain .

Tried the new passenger.xml and that got rid of the hum on touchdown and taxi...
Step in the right direction... 8-)

Yes. No splashdown but no rumble. Now I can test out this latest update. I like it so far.

Lest anyone think we're crazy, here's a 3 minute video showing the issue. The reason I thought to record it was, I happened to load up in a place with a direct headwind gusting around 20kts. Every time windspeed exceeded 20kts, the rumble sound was triggered even though I was sitting motionless at the dock. I actually like the effect (if it were only part of an overall water audio package, instead of the whole thing for me)... not sure about tying it to airspeed though. ;-)

It was captured on video less pronounced than it actually is, for me. I hear it on takeoff and landing and in the video you really can't. Oh well... it's evident at the dock, in the beginning.

With a 20 knot wind you would have substantial wave action and bounce if stationary on the water , still counts as an accurate representation in my book !

The rumble sound on my system is great , but its a special case as there are 3 of them , the speakers on the monitor don't reproduce frequencies that low and so one doesn't hear a rumble , the second level of the sound system has the frequencies below 100 hertz limited and so doesn't " rumble " but does rattle , the third level has all frequencies above 400 shelved , and runs 15 " speakers that perform well down to 25 hertz , that rumbles very well , I suspect clipping is the issue , this happens when the signal overwhelms the circuit its running through , its signature is a buzz or clipping click and tends to be an issue on smaller full range speaker and amplification systems trying to cope with too much data.

Our intrepid team will come up with a workable solution , I have a resampled rattle recording from Mike who did the engine sounds and turning off the sound altogether is an even more likely event , it doesn't happen on all systems and that makes its resolution somewhat more problematic as it needs to sound good on all systems , not just in studio.

I don't think that it is clipping. I attached a 200 watt sound system to my PC and the issue is still the same. The subwoofer CLEARLY rumbles. The only improvement is when I can turn the subwoofer level down.

Haha, true enough. But what if you were inside a breakwater or in the lee of a float, or...

;-) Just kidding. I do like the rumble, just would like some waves to go with it. I do appreciate the troubleshooting time you guys are putting into it.

Going back to the "auditory confusion" a couple pages back:
Chuck says:
"it could be argued that cockpit shake sounds would predominate during takeoff if you could hear them over a roaring engine at max power with no muffler of any sort.

In real life that engine sound would exceed 130 db and no wave from a pontoon could be possibly heard being substantially less than that level , above a 6 dbu difference the human ear could not perceive it as a distinct sound or determine its direction , other sounds are effectively drowned out."

Think I see what you're trying to achieve - need something other than engine sounds to indicate movement over water during takeoff and landing. Just splashing is not really realistic. I've been messing with my sound system; by adjusting the bass in my woofer I can get the rumble I think you guys are referring to but I don't think my system is up to the sounds that should be coming through. Here's hoping that you can modify them so my humble system can handle them... :D
Thanks,
Bob
