See above. We're working on it.

Just installed the 8/8 update - water sounds still broken; assume/hope your still working on it?
Thanks,
Bob

There is a degree of auditory confusion involved in the issue , the engine sound recordings are comparatively higher energy , IE recorded with a constant maximum dbu level , the wave recordings used in fsx use more modulation in their volume or dbu levels to simulate the splashing repeating as it loops , its to be remarked if engine sounds are played back at the same volume as environment , engine sounds will drown out the wave sound .

Setting the engine sounds to 50 % and environment to 100 augments the wave sounds in proportion to the engine , it could be argued that cockpit shake sounds would predominate during takeoff if you could hear them over a roaring engine at max power with no muffler of any sort.

In real life that engine sound would exceed 130 db and no wave from a pontoon could be possibly heard being substantially less than that level , above a 6 dbu difference the human ear could not perceive it as a distinct sound or determine its direction , other sounds are effectively drowned out.

On top of that you'd be wearing headphones! I understand there is a discussion on the PMDG forum about the lack of tyre 'chirp' or screech when landing the DC-6. No-one wants to hear that given a pilot's distance from the tyres, the noise of four radials plus headphones hearing your tyres hit the tarmac would be a bloody miracle! But despite the clamour for realism simmers don't really want too much of it! Sound effects! Yay!

I'll get me coat. :D

There's no auditory confusion - maybe it's system specific to a few of us, but after the update and expansion pack, on touchdown on the water there is what sounds like speaker feedback instead of the intended sound (the other sounds are still normal except the water touchdown/hydroplane comes as a obnoxious feedback sound). I have turned all the sounds off as a test and still have this hum/buzz feedback sound.
Thanks,
Bob

Yes. I would love to have no splash at all rather than the sound that I have now.

OK, further to the above, I did a test:
Started cold and dark on the water with the STOL floats

Went into prepar3d v4 options, sound and turned down all the sounds to zero; so there should be no sound at all

Started the plane and began the taxi on water. There are no sounds but when I reach the thresh hold for the water sounds to kick in I get the speaker feedback hum noise - remember all sounds are turned off and there should be no sound

Cut back the throttle to reduce speed and the feedback hum noise disappears when i reach the thresh hold speed.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Do you have a subwoofer? The bass in the file is my problem. If I turn down the subwoofer, the rumble declines, but it also makes the other sounds too sharp.

Hi Kdub,
I just say it sounds like speaker feedback when the water sounds are called - I'm sure there is something else going on because all the other sounds are correct and normal.

Are you using a device of some kind to control RPM? If so, please unplug it and try just using the mouse... (turning the FS sound off using Q).

If there's no feedback... then it's likely it's something to do with your device BUT, that said, we are looking into this but so far, without being able to replicate it... very hard to fix.

The interim measure regarding 'SND18.wav' that was provided here is no longer recommended. A better solution found further in this thread is now in effect.

Thanks for the detailed outline of what the sound in question was , that is a cockpit rumble sound generated above 10 knots and part of the custom sound set that's not controlled by the FSX volume slider .

An optional version is attached in this post and would be put in the DHC-2_XML_Sounds folder within the float version(s)

In this file the volume is considerably reduced and low frequency levels lowered relative to the high , creating more of a rattle .

Here's what I have tried so far:

First replaced the SND18.wav supplied in the beaver float. Got the exact same result as before; on touchdown and until the plane slows below 10 knots have the hum.

Tried turning off the SND18.wav completely same result as before; same hum on touchdown.

Tried replacing SND18 with the HydroplaneSplash as suggested above. Exact same result; on touchdown all I get is the hum. No change in volume.

It seems like when that sound is called it is not played at all but something is injected

Thanks,
Bob

Not sure what to make of this result Bob , might I ask what you are using as a sound system ?
