Ron, unless something has changed radically, when "off" the screen on the AP should be totally blank...

It works as described in the manual , found in the base aircrafts manual folder .
Runs directly from the radio circuit , as well its breaker and the electrical current models work , if you don't don't want that operating in flight hit the breaker.

Guys,
The AP receives power from the Avionics bus (switch ON)
When it is powered, after the preflight test, shows a flashing baro setting until confirmed, after that shows data from preselected altitude.
When it is engaged (ON) shows current roll and pitch modes, and a squared AP icon.
If CB is pulled off, AP is completely dark.
Please note that AP can be engaged on the ground -and that should be done at least first flight of day- in order to verify it works as expectedd.
Also note that, either on ground or in flight, yoke manual control can override AP commands with difficulty, and AP won't disengage because of being manually forced.
